Crowd level: Quiet. Room to linger
Best season March–June and October, when the terraces are green. Summer midday is bright and empty, which is fine if you bring water.
The Ajuda botanical garden is a teaching garden that went quiet. Terraces, a fountain, a view toward the river, and almost no one timing a pastry. It is one of the oldest botanical gardens in Portugal, and it behaves like a garden.
The short version
The garden was founded in the 18th century beside the Ajuda Palace, to teach princes about plants after the court settled on this hill. It is older than the botanical garden most visitors mean when they say the one downtown. Walk the terraces slowly. That was the curriculum.

A bifana in Ajuda
Eat a bifana and a coffee in Ajuda. Belém’s pastry line is the queue you walked uphill to avoid. Do not go down there out of guilt.

Os Belenenses, if you want a club
The Restelo is the neighborhood’s football ground, home of the traditional Belenenses side in the lower leagues. A smaller match there fits this hill better than a prime-time derby.
