Crowd level: Quiet. Room to linger
Best season April–June and September. Summer evenings are pleasant. Do not wander off marked paths after dark.
Montes Claros looks over the river from inside Monsanto’s planted forest. You get the bridge and the water without the castle-terrace crowd. The forest is a 20th-century decision. The view is the reward for taking the bus or the path.
The short version
Parque Florestal de Monsanto was planted from the 1930s, a city forest project associated with Duarte Pacheco, on hills that had been bare. It is not ancient woodland. It is a civic planting that worked. Use a maintained viewpoint. Skip abandoned structures in the woods.

The picnic you carried
Pack food. Monsanto is a forest. A kiosk is a kiosk. Do not expect a restaurant to save an underpacked walk.
A game nearby
The park’s own trails
People run and cycle here. That is the sport. A stadium would undo the reason you came up the hill.
