Crowd level: Quiet. Room to linger

Best season April–October for the park. The museum has its own closed days. The lawns are the part that works even in a short visit.

The costume museum sits in the Monteiro-Mor palace park in Lumiar, north of the center. Peacocks, lawns, a palace, and picnics. Almost no one with a flag pin. It feels like a day out inside the city.

The short version

The Palácio do Monteiro-Mor and its park passed into public hands and now hold the national costume museum. The clothes are the collection. The park is why you stay. Lumiar was a village on the road north, and parts of it still walk that way.

A neighborhood lunch in Lumiar

Eat around the park like a person who lives in the north of the city. Do not detour to Belém for a pastry you will regret standing in line for. A soup and a grilled fish nearby is the meal.

Youth football and futsal in Lumiar

Sporting CP is the commercial machine associated with this side of the city’s imagination. Look for a youth or neighborhood futsal game instead of a stadium tour.
