Crowd level: Easy. Busy only at the obvious hour

Best season Weekday mornings. Tour schedules change with the season. October is busy in Hyde Park. Check hours before you promise someone the sofa.

Drive About 1 hr 45 min–2 hr 15 min

Same Hyde Park drive as Springwood. The mansion is north of the Roosevelt home, a few minutes by car.

Parking. The site has its own lot. Do not assume a Springwood ticket parks you here.

Frederick W. Vanderbilt's Hudson River house, a National Historic Site a few minutes from Springwood. A Gilded Age house with a lawn, not a Newport mansion tour with a shuttle crowd.

Worth knowing

  • Pairing the houses

The Roosevelt house and the Vanderbilt house are separate tours. A pass that covers both has existed. Confirm it on the Park Service site. Do not buy two stories from a third-party tour if you only wanted a walk.

  • The library

The two houses plus the FDR library is more than one easy morning. Eat in Hyde Park between them.

The short version

The Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site preserves the house McKim, Mead & White designed for Frederick and Louise Vanderbilt. It is run by the same Park Service unit as the Roosevelt sites. The house is a guided tour. A Roosevelt-Vanderbilt annual pass has been sold for the entrance fees. Read nps.gov for the current price. This page will not guess it.

Food nearby

Eveready Diner

The visitor center is not lunch. Eveready Diner’s Hyde Park page prints 4184 Route 9 North and hours of 7:00 am–10:00 pm, Monday through Sunday. Phone (845) 229-8100.

Farms and stands nearby

  • Hyde Park Farmers Market

The town page says local fruit and vegetables, meats and eggs, Italian specialties, baked goods, breads, and bagels, plus food you can eat there.

Season. The town page says Saturdays, 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., June through October, at 4390 Albany Post Road, across from Town Hall. It names Saturday, June 6, 2026 as opening day. The chamber sponsors it.

The same Saturday market as Springwood, a few minutes north. The page does not print a cash-only rule. Use the Hyde Park, New York town page, not a Cincinnati market with a similar name.

Music

Fisher Center at Bard

Up the river in Annandale. A summer festival and a year-round calendar. Not a concert on the Vanderbilt lawn unless the hall says so.

Official calendar

A church

St. James’ Episcopal Church

The town parish, closer to the Roosevelt home than to this house, and a quieter church stop than any cathedral. Service times are the parish's.

Their site prints Sunday Holy Eucharist at 8:00 am and 10:00 am. On Sunday, December 28, 2026, they print one service only, at 10:00 am.
