Crowd level: Easy. Busy only at the obvious hour

Best season Weekday mornings. Clear weekends draw surfers and wanderers. That is fine if you park legally and stay off private paths.

Drive 1 hr

From downtown San Francisco on a calm day. The last miles are slow on purpose. Do not follow a navigation trick onto a ranch road.

Parking. Street parking is small. Use marked spaces. The beach lots can fill. If you cannot park legally, the day is over. That is the rule.

Bolinas is a lagoon, a cliff, and a town that spent years taking down its highway sign. Come for the shore and a coffee. Buy something. Do not treat the place like a backdrop, and do not hunt the sign as a joke.

The short version

The town’s modern reputation includes the 1971 oil spill, when residents helped clean seabirds, and a long preference for not being found. The lagoon and the cliff are older than that attitude. The San Andreas runs through the lagoon. You are on a fault and a community. Act like both are real.

Food nearby

Coast Cafe

Coast Cafe is the straightforward meal in town. Eat there or buy a pastry and leave the dunes alone. A picnic you packed is also correct. Do not arrive expecting a food scene.
