The Grand Canal is extraordinary, and in season it is also a queue with water under it. The alleys around San Marco move slower than the boats. If you want the lagoon without the crush, step south or inland.

Crowd level: Easy. Busy only at the obvious hourEasy
Best season April–June and September. August is kinder than Venice, though Sottomarina’s beach fills.
Chioggia sits at the south mouth of the lagoon, a fishing port with its own canals and a clock tower that does not need a ticket. The fish market still sets the morning. You can walk the main canal, eat what came off the boat, and be back toward Venice by evening if you insist.
The short version
In 1379–80 the War of Chioggia nearly broke Venice. Genoa took the town; Venice took it back. That fight, more than any palace, decided who ran the Adriatic. The port never stopped working after that.

The morning fish market
Eat at a trattoria facing the canal, where the board is the catch. Skip any laminated seafood tower decorated with a gondola.

Union Clodiense
Chioggia’s local football club plays well below Serie A. A Sunday match is a town afternoon, not a tourist package. Skip a trip inland for a bigger stadium.

Best season May–June and September–October. Winter is quiet and gray in a useful way.
An hour inland, Treviso is a walled city of frescoed houses and small rivers. People live in the center. You can drink a prosecco in a courtyard and still hear a bicycle, not a tour radio.
The short version
Allied bombing in 1944 tore up the center, and much of what you see was rebuilt. That is why the frescoes feel both old and carefully put back. Le Beccherie, a restaurant on a side street, claims the modern tiramisu started in its kitchen in the 1960s. Treat that as a claim, then eat the thing.

Le Beccherie, or a plain bacaro
If you want the tiramisu story, book Le Beccherie. If you want Tuesday, take an ombra and a cicchetto in a small bar that is not performing.

Lower-league football, not Verona
The Veneto’s famous clubs play elsewhere. If a Serie D or amateur fixture is on in town, that is the right scale. Do not detour to a big stadium for this day.

Best season April–June and September. Midday Burano trippers spill over the bridge; morning is the visit.
Mazzorbo is the island next to Burano, joined by a footbridge, and almost nobody stops. Vegetable plots, a bell tower, a long lunch. Burano’s colored houses are the postcard. This is the Tuesday next door.
The short version
Mazzorbo was a larger settlement that thinned as Venice rose. The bell tower is what is left of that older town. The gold Dorona grape, nearly wiped out by the 1966 flood, is grown again on the island at Venissa.
Food nearby
Trattoria Alla Maddalena
Eat on Mazzorbo, not on Burano’s canal just because the houses are painted. Book the trattoria. Venissa is the wine estate if you want one serious table.

Lagoon rowing clubs
The sport here is rowing. Local clubs train on the lagoon, and the spring Vogalonga is a public row you can watch from the bank. There is no stadium, which is the point.
