Positano

Positano, Amalfi Coast, Italy · 40.628° N, 14.485° E

Positano is a staircase with a dress code. The coast road in summer is a parking strategy. The same water has towns that still smell like nets and lemons.

Small-sided football on the island

Crowd level: Easy. Busy only at the obvious hour

Best season May–June and September. August ferries are full. Book the boat, not a beach club.

Procida is a small island with a pastel harbor at Corricella and a fortified hill above it. It is less vertical than Positano and less interested in your outfit. Walk up before you photograph down.

The short version

Terra Murata is the fortified old town. The island was named Italian Capital of Culture in 2022, which raised its profile and did not turn it into a staircase of boutiques. Il Postino was filmed here in the 1990s. The harbor is older than the movie.

Sunday fish, early

A trattoria on the harbor with a short menu is the meal. Sunday lunch is the local one. Arrive early. Do not collect a tasting menu because the houses are colored.

Small-sided football on the island

Procida’s game is local and small. Napoli’s stadium is a ferry and a bad idea if you came here to avoid a crowd. Swim instead.

Spaghetti with colatura

Crowd level: Easy. Busy only at the obvious hour

Best season April–June and September. The coast road is calmer on a weekday morning. Do not drive it at dusk in August if you can help it.

Cetara is a fishing town on the Amalfi road that still leads with anchovies. The beach is a working edge, not a catwalk. You stop for one plate and you do not need to conquer the coast.

The short version

The town’s watchtower is the usual answer to old raids. Its real fame is colatura di alici, a fermented anchovy sauce in the family of Roman garum. The sauce is the history you can taste. The tower is the history you can walk past.

Spaghetti with colatura

Eat spaghetti with colatura, lemon, and nothing clever. Any trattoria that leads with that plate is the right one. Skip a multicourse sunset menu up the road in Positano.

Crowd level: Easy. Busy only at the obvious hour

Best season June and September. August is a beach town doing beach-town things. Come earlier in the day.

Palinuro is a cape south of the Amalfi circus, with caves, a beach, and evenings that still empty out. It is not undiscovered. It is simply not performing. The Cilento is the point of coming this far.

The short version

The town takes its name from Palinurus, Aeneas’s helmsman in the Aeneid, lost overboard. Up the coast, Velia is a Greek site without Pompeii’s queue. The Cilento was a quiet edge of the Kingdom of Naples. The cape is the story. The swim is the rest.

Food nearby

Grilled fish above the marina

Eat grilled fish and mozzarella di bufala in the lanes above the marina, not at the lido with the speaker. Ask what was landed. Leave if the answer is a shrug toward a freezer.

A game nearby

Summer games on the beach pitches

The sporting life here is a local tournament on the sand, not a Serie A weekend. Watch if one is posted. Otherwise swim.
